Tesla, Inc. was founded in 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, with the goal of proving that electric vehicles could be better, quicker, and more fun to drive than gasoline cars.

Elon Musk joined shortly after as an early investor and played a critical role in the company’s direction, launching the Roadster in 2008 — a breakthrough in electric vehicle design and performance.
